Support Global REACH

The University of Michigan has always had a strong commitment to and interest in international outreach efforts, beginning with U-M president James Angell, who was appointed Minister to China in the 1880s. Global REACH is another example of that commitment.

Global REACH is a unit within the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) that facilitates the international education and research activities of its faculty and students. When you support these initiatives, you are having a direct impact on the training of current and future medical healers, and on the health of their patients, their target communities, and our global society overall.

We welcome your participation in making a difference in our global mission. Donors may target specific Global REACH activities or make a non-targeted gift, in which case the Global REACH leadership team will assess current needs and apply the gift to the area where it is most needed.

Your Gifts to Global REACH:

  • Support student international experiences, ensuring we attract the most talented students to study global health issues;
  • Provide valuable learning experiences for students and researchers by providing funding to support activities abroad;
  • Promote global health discourse and engagement through conference and event sponsorship; and
  • Fund capacity building and in-country support for international partners through training and mentorship, educational resources, and research collaborations.

Need Real Examples?

  • Previous gifts at the $3,000 level have been used to support overseas clinical electives and international research experiences for UMMS medical students (read quotes from M-4 students here); as well as tuition, fees, and travel for international coursework.
  • A gift in the range of $10,000-15,000 could support a UMMS faculty-led summer research project or community-based project (PDF) or support in-country training programs such as family planning in Ethiopia or clinical training in Ghana.
  • Paired trainee collaboration and in-country support for our research partners are other attractive areas of support for our donors.  Some of the current initiatives can be found here.
  • Some donors choose to create named or endowed fellowships or scholarship programs.  Two examples (as shown in recent Activities Reports) include the Matovinoch Endowed Fellow in Medicine and the Woll Family Global Health Opportunities Endowed Fund. The Hauslohner Global REACH fund, created in 2014, supports specific research activities in Africa.
  • Major gifts could be used to support multi-disciplinary initiatives involving students and faculty that cross departments within our medical school (and often involve other schools) focusing on education and research. For instance: support of a post-doctoral fellow (annual cost $50,00); provision of one month of training in global health settings for all medical students (annual cost, $500,000); support of five students a year to obtain a Masters Degree as part of their participation in the Global Health and Disparities Track (annual cost, $500,000); cover the costs of ten career development awards for faculty who are interested in global health (annual cost, $100,000); or funding to support an existing or new collaboration platform ($10 million).
