Global Health Initiatives Forum: Introducing the Global Surgery Center, Global Emergency Medicine Network

Wednesday, February 21, 2018 - 5:30pm
Taubman Health Sciences Library, 6000

UPDATE: This is the make-up event following a January postponement.

An upcoming Global Health Initiatives Forum event will feature updates from leaders of two departments with extensive – and growing – collaborations around the world: Emergency Medicine and Surgery. This is a rescheduled event after a weather-related cancellation in December.

With nearly 150 faculty, the Michigan Medicine Department of Surgery is engaged in global health activities around the world. This fall, the Department codified its extensive global health network through the creation of the Michigan Center for Global Surgery.

The Center’s founding Director, Professor of Surgery Krishnan Raghavendran, will detail the new effort as well as highlight some of the Department’s individual projects abroad. Surgery Department partnerships extend across a dozen countries, including Vietnam, where UMMS faculty lead hand reconstruction surgery training workshops at Hue Central Hospital; India, where a partnership with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences includes both clinical and research training; and Ethiopia, where a team of UMMS faculty led the creation of the country’s first kidney transplant center.

The event will also feature a presentation from Prashant Mahajan, Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine, about growing international collaborations within that department. In 2018, Emergency Medicine will launch a Michigan Medicine-led International Emergency Department Research Network focused on education, research and advocacy for the care and treatment of patients in the acute care setting. Initial prospective partners include longstanding UMMS institutional collaborators in India, Brazil, China, Ethiopia, Ghana and more.

A light dinner will be served. Please RSVP to Robyn Hodges at
