Summer fun at Winter School: 2018 Brazil Winter Schools program, travel grant details

Each winter, the University of São Paulo Medical School invites medical students from around the world to learn and network for two weeks at Brazil’s preeminent medical and research university.

UMMS student Jiaxin Huang (center) with fellow students during the 2017 Winter School program. "There were students from 16-17 different countries, so there was quite a bit of reflection ... and comparison between the features of the Brazilian health system to that our of own countries," Huang said.

This year marks the fourth annual Winter Schools program at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP). The program represents a great learning opportunity – FMUSP is the largest higher education and research institution in Brazil and the largest hospital system in Latin America – as well as a chance to connect with like-minded counterparts from around the world. This year’s program runs from July 16-27, 2018, with individual course offerings in autopsy pathology, cardiology, gynecology, dermatology, endocrinology, and more.

FMUSP offers the program free to qualified applicants (housing is provided) and Global REACH offers $1,000 grants to help offset associated travel costs. A limited number of stipends will be awarded with the expectation that awardees provide a brief report upon their return to help future students assess this potential opportunity. Priority will be given to those in the GHD Path of Excellence, but all medical students are welcome to apply.

For students interested in incorporating global health into their education and perhaps their careers, FMUSP Winter Schools represent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A longtime institutional partner of Michigan Medicine, FMUSP dedicates a lot of resources to the annual Winter School program and feedback from past U-M participants has always been positive. In addition to classroom sessions organized by program topic, the experience includes extensive clinical visits as well as social events organized by the Brazilian students for participants to enjoy the culture of São Paulo.
