Study opportunity in Uganda, January 2013

Deadline for Submission: July 11, 2012

Global REACH, in conjunction with the Sujal Parikh Memorial Fund, will provide up to two scholarships to University of Michigan medical students to participate in a Social Medicine Course that will take place in Uganda in January of 2013. The month-long social medicine course ‘Beyond the Biologic Basis of Disease’ is offered by SocMed - an organization that merges the teaching of medicine with an understanding of the socioeconomic, cultural, political, and historical underpinnings of illness.

Global REACH is particularly interested in finding students who could provide us with a thoughtful critique of how such a course could be developed through the University of Michigan Medical School. Preference will also be given to those students who are hoping to tie this into plans for continued or future work in Uganda.   If you'd like to know a little about Sujal Parikh and the two medical students who participated in this program last year, you will find their stories on the home page of this website (photo stories 1 and 2).

Although the formal SocMed deadline has already passed, UMMS has secured two spots for qualified students. If you are interested in applying, please send a brief, 1-page essay on how you would utilize this opportunity to strengthen our global health programs here as well as how it would fit with your career plans to Heather Makiharju (heardley@umich.edu) by Wednesday July 11th.  We will notify scholarship recipients, who will then be required to complete a full application.
